Georgia State camp preview: Quarterbacks

Emiere Scaife. (Georgia State)

Emiere Scaife. (Georgia State)

Georgia State’s football team will open its camp on Friday ahead of its season-opening game vs. Ball State at the Georgia Dome on Sept. 2.

The team went 6-7 last season, its final defeat coming to San Jose State in its first bowl game, the Cure Bowl in Orlando.

Coach Trent Miles’ squad returns nine starters on defense, six or seven on offense and has a depth that it hasn’t since he took over three seasons ago.

Today we will start a position group breakdown.

Who is competing: Redshirt junior Conner Manning, a transfer from Utah, redshirt sophomore Emiere Scaife and redshirt freshman Aaron Winchester.

Key stat: None of them have started a game in college. Previous starter Nick Arbuckle started every game the previous two years and handled almost every snap while passing for more than 7,500 yards.

Who has the edge? Scaife has the most experience in offensive coordinator Luke Huard’s system. He likely has the strongest arm of the three. He didn’t look as solid as the others in the spring games, but it’s folly to base too much off spring scrimmages.

Manning set numerous records while in high school in California. He has nice touch on his throws.

Winchester brings a different skill set because he can also run. Scaife can run, but Winchester seems faster and shiftier in the open field. He looked the best in the spring, but see the above disclaimer.

Miles has said a starter won’t be named until the days before the game against the Fightin’ Cardinals Fighting football team.
