The Georgia State men’s basketball team (16-13, 9-11 Sun Belt) will play Texas (14-15, 8-12) on Thursday at 8:15 p.m. in the first round of the Sun Belt tournament in New Orleans.

The Panthers swept the Bobcats in their two regular-season meetings, but one thing about Georgia State is you are never sure which parts of their game will be working right on any given night.

What I am fairly sure is if the Panthers were to win this tournament, Ron Hunter isn’t going to make any sudden moves and risk tearing his Achilles again like he did last year.

Last games

The Panthers were beaten by Louisiana-Monroe 91-78. It was the most points allowed by the Panthers this season.

The Bobcats defeated South Alabama 68-57 for their second consecutive win.

Who are the expected starters for Georgia State?

This is a tough one because in big games coach Ron Hunter typically shortens his bench and goes with the experienced players that he’s comfortable with. However, the offense started to play better with the insertion of freshman Austin Donaldson at point and sophomore Jordan Session at forward. In the second game, Jeremy Hollowell, Isaiah Dennis, Markus Crider, Kevin Ware and Jeff Thomas started. That’s a combination you won’t see starting Thursday’s game. Hollowell, Isaiah Williams, Thomas, Crider and T.J. Shipes started the first game against the Bobcats. I think that is close to who will start the second game.

G Kevin Ware. The senior is averaging 12.0 points per game and is playing a lot of point guard now.

F Markus Crider. He is averaging 8.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.

F T.J. Shipes. He is averaging 5.4 point and 5.1 rebounds per game. I think he and Crider will start to try to deal with the Bobcats’ strong inside game.

G Isaiah Williams. He is averaging 9.4 points per game.

F Jeremy Hollowell. He leads the team with an average of 14.7 points per game.
