The Georgia State men’s basketball team (16-12, 9-10 Sun Belt) will visit Louisiana-Monroe (18-12, 14-5) on Saturday for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
Both teams are in the Sun Belt tournament. The Warhawks are locked into the second seed and will receive a double-bye to the semifinals. The Panthers are in sixth and can move up to fifth depending upon tiebreakers that won’t be decided until after Saturday.
The Panthers defeated Monroe 65-51 on Jan. 14. Jeff Thomas led the team with 14 points. Isaiah Williams and Jeremy Hollowell added 10 each.
The Warhawks have lost just twice since that game in Atlanta and this will be the final home game for its seniors.
The Panthers defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 72-69 with five guys scoring at least 10 points. It was the team’s third win in four games after losing seven of its previous eight.
The Warhawks defeated Georgia Southern 83-76.
Who are the expected starters for Georgia State?
G Kevin Ware. The senior is averaging 12.4 points per game and is playing a lot of point guard now.
F Markus Crider. He is averaging 8.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
F Jordan Session. The sophomore is averaging 2.6 points and 1.7 rebounds per game. He’s not playing necessarily because he scores, he’s playing because he will take the shots and has shown that he can make them.
G Isaiah Williams. He is averaging 9.4 points per game. He has scored at least 10 points in six of the last seven games since being moved from point to off guard. He is averaging 16.5 points since the move. He seems a totally different player, one who can move to spots to get his shots, rather than having to try to score off by having to come off ball screens.
F Jeremy Hollowell. He leads the team with an average of 14.7 points per game. Like Williams, he seems more comfortable in the offense. Coach Ron Hunter said his transfers are starting to figure things out.
