Georgia State game thread: Appalachian State

The Georgia State men’s basketball team (12-4, 5-2 Sun Belt) will play at Appalachian State (4-13, 2-4) at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

This is the team’s first road game since it defeated Texas State on Jan. 2. After going 4-1 during its recent homestand, the Panthers will play its next three on the road. After the trip to Boone, the team will play at Arkansas State on Jan. 28 in an important matchup between Sun Belt hopefuls, and at Arkansas-Little Rock in another important game.

This is a dangerous game for Georgia State. Not only are they coming off the emotional win over Georgia Southern, but they are facing a very good 3-point shooting team that it lost to last year in Boone.

Last games

The Panthers defeated Georgia Southern 69-66 in overtime.

Markus Crider, T.J. Shipes and Isaiah Dennis led the team to victory.

Appalachian State defeated Arkansas State 86-72.

Who are the expected starters for Georgia State?

I think Georgia State may go with three guards to try to combat Appalachian State’s three-point shooting.

G Kevin Ware. Averaging 13.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Ware had what coach Ron Hunter said may have been his worst game at  Georgia State in the win over Georgia Southern. He scored 10 points, but six came in the opening minutes, and had four turnovers.

G Isaiah Williams. Averaging 8.6 points and 2.8 assists per game. Williams has yet to find his stroke on offense. He scored 10 points, missed 9 of his 13 shots against the Eagles and had five turnovers.

F Jeremy Hollowell. Averaging a team-high 15.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Another player who has struggled offensively the past two games. He missed 8-of-9 against the Eagles and finished with 11 points.

G Isaiah Dennis. Averaging 4.8 points per game. Dennis may start because of his defense. He is also a good rebounder. If the Mountaineers shoot as many 3-pointers as you would think, there should be lots of long rebounds that the guards will need to grab.

F Markus Crider. Averaging 8.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game.
