It was a win the Panthers needed to become bowl eligible. It was a win the Panthers needed partially because of a loss to Louisiana-Lafayette earlier this season in which Lutz had a punt blocked for a touchdown, and in which he called for a fake punt that failed late in the game that helped turn the momentum to the Cajuns.
Here’s what he said on Satuday:
“It’s obviously a big weight lifted off my shoulder, having kicks like that could have affected a possible bowl bid. The team had my back and believed in me the whole time.
“For us to come out and get that win was unbelievable for me and our team.”
“You could tell our emotions all week, we knew it was going to happen. With their potent offense, you knew it was unbelievable our defense was able to hold them to 7. Other than West Virginia, no one’s done that.
“The way we prepared all week and our attitude coming out, we knew it was going to happen. It’s just an unbelievable feeling.”
On what happened after the loss to Liberty, considered a turning point in the season:
“We won. We got the feeling. Our preparation has changed. Coach Miles, coach Holsopple, they’ve done so much to get us ready. Even when we were losing we still had hope. Every game there’s a chance. Every single game, even when we lost. We’ve been playing sudden death football for the past six weeks. We were ready.”
